Image registration/frame alignment for time-lapse?

programs for the Mac (X11 ones are okay) that would help with alignment.

Any thoughts?

Use a tripod that has a quick-release; being careful when
re-installing the camera on the tripod can reduce such registration
problems to a minimum.
