Specifically, the switch was damaged when the door was opened too far. If
I could get the door off in one piece, the repair should be fairly easy.
This little P&S has worked faithfully for years otherwise.

You've already used this one for several years so you've already got its worth
out of it. I'd just get another one. You'll find them new or like on eBay for
$70 or less.

I accidentally busted my Olympus Stylus Epic P&S shooter. Took it to the
camera store for an estimate of repairs. To replace the door and power
switch will cost $20 less than a brand new Stylus. This is a bit rich for
a camera with a few miles on it. Does anyone have experience doing
repairs on this camera?

Go for it. It's a $20.00 risk the way you describe it.

He meant it'd cost $20.00 less than a new one, not that the repair would cost
$20.00

Think about it: his camera is now worthless.
He can pay x to repair it, or x + $20.00 for a new one.

He can attempt to repair it himself... if he does that and fails,
he will pay x+$20.00 for a replacement (or maybe still just x for
the other guy to repair the failed attempt).

If he wants a working camera and won't repair himself, he has to
pay x in any case. The $20.00 is the only risk he is taking if
he's forced to buy new.

Cheers,
Alan

Oh i see, so the "Go for it" and the risk are for reparing it himself. Yeah I
totally agree. I just don't think it's worth paying for its repair.

If the repair person presented you with this statement:

"I can repair it for $70...or I can give you a brand new one, in the box,
with full new warranty for $20 more."

What you you do?

No brainer!
Take the new one.

Given today's throw-it-away culture, the answer is well known. Too bad
the repair wasn't half the cost, I wouldn't be asking here in that case.

I don't know that this is much of an endictment on a "throw-away culture."
That little bitty camera you've had for years won't do much damage to our
land-fills...
Now disposable diapers, on the other hand?? -Now you're talkin' throw-away
culture!
One baby's butt could fill literally thousands of times the land-fill space
that your little Epic would after only a single year of poop...
