Here is a B&W take of my Exposure 7 trial.

For this rendition I wanted to see how it matched up against NIK Silver

Here I used an Ilford B&W emulation + Vignette, and added 50% grain as
if developed in Rodinal, and a few other tweaks.
This really looks like grain, not noise.

What was your final verdict on HDR Express? Did you buy it?

Yes. I like the subtlety of the results, and I can afford it. It adds
another tool to my tool box.
Very different HDR results from those produced by NIK HDR Efex Pro or
Photomatix, and even HDR Pro in Photoshop.

Wasn't that you who posted the photo of a tree next to a road,
inviting everyone to try some HDR on it? Did you try the new software
on that one?

Yup! Here is a rendition of that tree done with HDR Express 3.

For ~$80, I'll probably get it, too.

Okay, I got the lighting where I wanted it pretty quickly, but when I
saved the image as a Tiff, it seemed to desaturate it in a major way.
Did you notice anything like that? Here are the before and after
images:

http://imgur.com/5Vn88BN

They are both JPG, but I worked with the raw file, and saved the
adjusted image as a Tiff. The Tiff is desaturated just like the JPG.
There is a saturation slider, and I'm sure I can fix this, but this is
not WYSIWYG for some reason, and I would have to do the trial and
error thing.

Why did you save it as a tiff?

As opposed to what?

Is tiff, or jpeg, your only options. I was thinking you were talking
about a PS plugin, or that there was an option to export to LR or PS.

I do most everything in DXO Optics Pro (& Viewpoint) now. LR & PS are
just for things I can't do with DXO - cloning, spot removal, etc. I
export from DXO to TIFF so I have an uncompressed processed copy from
the original raw file.

I honestly don't do much post. I don't try to sell, or display
anything, except displaying some stuff on Flickr. But even with
Flickr, I do little post. I just point friends to the photos of car
shows, air shows, whatever. In fact, this link points to the first
time I bothered with cropping, leveling, and anything beyond basic
exposure before I put them on Flickr (warning: it's just a bunch of
cars):

I see you had a poseur "Fabulous Hudson Hornet" in that set, here is a
real runner,
https://db.tt/SAFUrxQ2
https://db.tt/JKrPBH4H

What's the background on those? I'm not familiar with them.

You just have to go back to 1948-1956.

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2014/05/05/original-fabulous-hudson-hornet-nascar-racer-to-be-added-to-national-historic-vehicle-register/

I see... What makes the one I ran across a poseur? I'm not saying it's
the real thing, but I'm not following what you're saying.

Just verbosity on my part, they were just words leading to my two
shots. The Hudson on your collection reminded me that I too had shots
of a "Fabulous Hudson Hornet".

Oh, okay. I had no idea what it was when I took the photo. There was
probably a sign describing it, but I never looked.

I had the color shift issue only when exporting from HDR Express. I'm
going to play around with it some more, but I didn't get a chance yet.

One reason for starting with DXO is that I always use it for lens
distortion correction. But what was happening was the lens info seemed
to disappear from the files when I processed with other software
first, so the automatic corrections weren't available. And there is no
way to force a lens profile onto a photo. This is just one more issue
I never got a chance to look into again. I'd really like to know why
the lens info disappears, and if I can fix that.

Anyway, once I started processing with DXO first, I realized I could
do all the other standard adjustments, too, and just as well as in PS
or LR, in my opinion. (I actually use PS Elements.)

Just to clarify, when using HDR Express are you opening RAW or DNG
files directly without any prior adjustment or conversion?
....or are you making lens corrections, and other tweaks first?

With HDR from LR5 DNGs/NEFs I only make the lens correction upon
competion of the round trip from LR to HDR express.

No - straight from the raw file, no other corrections at all. I'll let
you know what I find after I get a chance to play around with some
other files. I might even try their customer support to see if that's
a known issue.

I honestly don't do much post. I don't try to sell, or display
anything, except displaying some stuff on Flickr. But even with
Flickr, I do little post. I just point friends to the photos of car
shows, air shows, whatever. In fact, this link points to the first
time I bothered with cropping, leveling, and anything beyond basic
exposure before I put them on Flickr (warning: it's just a bunch of
cars):
