Since it magnifies the image from the lens in front, it also magnifies
its distortion and then adds a bit of its own.

Yes.

I saw some tests once that indicated maybe 25% drop in contrast and
resolving power with a 2x and about 10% with a 1.4x. This means if
your lens is good enough you can still get very good images with a 2x
but if your lens is a dog to start with (say a cheap zoom) you'll be
disappointed.

Canon publishes MTF charts for several of its lenses with 1.4x and 2x
converters so you can see the theoretical trade-offs.

Yes But like most things, "it depends." In my experience, major
brand teleconverters, used on one of the lenses they're intended for,
can give very good results. I recall liking the old Tamron SP converter
for their 80-210mm Adaptall lens, and the Nikon TC-14 with their
80-200mm.

Similar "generic" units from third party manufacturers (e.g. "Vivitar")
are almost always pretty poor.

Adapters or extenders that go in front of the lens are a similar, but
lesser breed. The legendary Rollei Mutars were quite good; the Nikon
units for their early digital cameras (e.g. CoolPix 995) were
unimpressive, and generic units (e.g. "Kenco) are usually just awful.

So the short version is that no matter what, they WILL degrade your
images; but price, brand and type determine how much.
