As DJI (like any other Chinese company) is ultimately controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, if they want to play hardball in retaliation (like they're doing with trade talks, tariffs, etc with Australia, et al), they can instruct DJI to shut down all DJI drones. As to whether the Chines government would order to DJI to do so. I doubt it very much. The government is at odds with other governments and having the populations of other countries angry at the Chinese government gives them no advantage at all - quite the contrary. Theoretically, yes, DJI can disable your drone. Practically, there are ways to avoid it. - don't update the s/w - don't update the no-fly zone maps Even with the no-fly zone maps you can override and fly, except in class-C/B airspace (maybe D too). There you have to "sign" a waiver with DJI in real time via their app[1]. This could give them an opportunity to completely disable your drone. [1] you also need to file with the ATC in your country for this. In the US you would need (I believe) a part 107 license and in Canada a commercial license. -- "...there are many humorous things in this world; among them the white man's notion that he is less savage than the other savages." -Samuel Clemens |

Actually in the US you can get an LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization Notification & Clearance) as a recreational UAS flyer without a Part 107 certificate. https://www.faa.gov/uas/programs_partnerships/data_exchange/laanc_facilities/ -- Regards, Savageduck |
