Default Found A Free Online Backup Service From AOL

Yesterday's NY Times web site had an article highlighting online backup
services, and they noted that AOL offers a free backup, with 5 G of storage
space, at their xdrive.com website.

I set up service with them yesterday, and it appears that there is no
catch--they give you software that can create backup sets and that will
automatically connect with their servers and backup files online as often as
daily (you can manually backup anytime you want, if the automatic daily
backup is insufficient).

At 5 gigabytes, I couldn't use it for photos, but I was able to upload
65,000 scanned text files, and it used up only 1.3 of my 5 gigabyte
allotment.

I had previously backed up with www.connected.com, and I didn't get anywhere
near that size, even though I paid a monthly fee, so this AOL deal looks
pretty good. If anyone can use a free backup service, this might be one to
look at.

Knowing AOL, there's something in the fine print about 1,000 hours or
45 days...

5GB? That's just one weekend's worth of photos.

I bought an iomega StorCenter wireless SAN (storage area network) and
some backup software. Each night the StorCenter receives any updates
made to my home server.

I'm not recommending the iomega StorCenter, it's a half-assed product,
but it's becoming practical to backup a TB or two. Consumer grade SANs
are becoming usable enough that you could place one in a safe or at a
friend's house.

Take a look at Phanfare.com. I started using them last year and find it
excellent. Search this newsgroup on "phanfare" and you'll find more
comments. The main things that set them apart are

a) It costs about $50 a year.

b) If you allow them, the site allows visitors to download full
resolution pictures, making distribution of family and similar photos
real easy.

c) Visitors do not need to join -- something many of my friends
appreciate.

d) They don't try to sell you anything since they make their money on
your annual fee. You can choose from a number of photo printing web
sites if you want prints.

Hope this helps.

Martin
