Adobe Camera RAW 5.4 Release Candidate has been released:
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Camera_Raw_5.4 At the bottom it says that the release includes new DNG Compatibility conversion options and that these choices help address the additional options available with an upcoming revision of the DNG Specification. Camera Raw 2.4 and later: The DNG file will be readable by Camera Raw 2.4 (Photoshop CS) and later, and Lightroom 1.0 and later Camera Raw 4.1 and later: The DNG file will be readable by Camera Raw 4.1 (Photoshop CS3) and later, and Lightroom 1.1 and later. The DNG file will often be readable by earlier versions, depending on the camera model Camera Raw 4.6 and later: The DNG file will be readable by Camera Raw 4.6 (Photoshop CS3) and later, and Lightroom 2.1 and later. The DNG file will often be readable by earlier versions, depending on the camera model Camera Raw 5.4 and later: The DNG file will be readable by Camera Raw 5.4 (Photoshop CS4) and later, and Lightroom 2.4 and later. The DNG file will often be readable by earlier versions, depending on the camera model What would be the disadvantage of using Camera Raw 2.4 and later for everything? |

However, if you are using a camera that is supported by an earlier version of Camera RAW, you will not have any problems. |

Adobe confuse everyone with how they release "updates" to ACR. the software doesn't change for existing models. All that happens is new cameras are included in later versions. Truth be known they could do as many others do and not restrict ACR to the current "CRW" or other camera makers files and avoid this issue. I suspect they do it so that when a new camera comes out and it coincides with a newer Photoshop, they can force you to upgrade to the later version. Someone a year or so back wrote a patch so that ACR would open later model Canon raw files that it had refused to open. It sees as if ACR reads the file size and decides if it will or will not open the file. If ACR 2.4 opens all your files, there is no advantage in upgrading. |

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I was under under the impression that these new options were for when converting from proprietary RAW to DNG using ACR 5.4? If this is the case, why would anyone restrict the compatibility of their DNG files to later versions of ACR only, when they can be compatible with all versions? What would the advantage be, except maybe reduced file size? |

Or would that be asking too much? it's not an opinion, it's a verifiable fact, as anyone who actually uses camera raw would know. even those who don't use camera raw could see how ignorant your statement is with nothing more than a cursory google search and looking at the numerous pages that explain the new features. minor releases of camera raw just adds cameras, although on occasion, a feature sneaks in. now why not just admit your mistake? |
