If you go with a freebie service, be sure to check their reputation with
regard to blocking outgoing spam. These services tend to be home base for
most Usenet spammers. They like the price. The alternative is to choose
a pay-for provider. Yeah, I know people will hate paying more and Comcast
didn't lower their price to make up for the reduced service. What I do know
is that more people than just myself do block some whole Usenet providers
because of the endless spam spewing out from them.

I've read a couple Comcasters that claim to have called Comcast and asked
for a reduction of their rates because of the loss in service and gotten
one. Five bucks a month or so, IIRC. FWIW.

So do I, it's not necessarily a bad thing!

It certainly cuts a lot of the rubbish out of this group.

P.S. Apologies to any genuine posters who use Google and whose words of
wisdom I no longer get to see, my loss no doubt.

I had to switch, and am now using free.teranews.com. There is a
negligible sign up fee of I believe $5, but otherwise free. I didn't
realize there were so many others and no idea how they compare but I'm
happy with this one so far.

Thanks for suggesting motzarella. It's working just fine.

As do I. That's a feature of that server, not an issue.

It certainly cuts a lot of the rubbish out of this group.

And the rest of them.

I know a lot of folks will scream, but the easiest to set up and use is
Google Groups. It is a web-based interface. The problem is that many
spammers have used the interface to post a LOT of spam on newsgroups,
and Google has done little about it. So on some newsgroups, people will
not reply to messages posted via GG. I stopped using it because of
that. However, if you want to try it, go to Google and search "google
groups".

In my case, my ISP still leaves the news server operating, just will not
do service/support to overcome any problems that occur. So it is usable.

I tried a lot of the third party servers. I will not pay extra for
Usenet, so restricted myself to free ones, and did not find one that I
was really happy with, but I am sure I did not try anywhere near ALL of
them.
