Since I lack any artistic aptitude, my opinion has little value, but
would it look better if the two plants were less focused? They do
appear to be very close to the building, or at least one does, so I
don't know if that would even be possible.

Their sharp focus and dominating position just seems distracting.

No. Although I prefer the processing of this one, I like the composition of
the first one better. That border is naff too!

I pay little attention to borders.

I like the first B+W but the vignetting is a bit overdone, and
distracts. I like the building straightened a bit as you've done, and
the cropping is right.
