pictures are good...is this right??

I'm on the side of the group that says no. Going digital does not in itself
make esthetically better pictures. I would tend to say, if a digicam user
was not aware of the nuances involved that separate a casual snap shot from
a composition when using film, a digital camera will not awaken the user.

However, a good digital camera could be an asset to someone who has a
sincere ongoing interest in improving photographing skills. But composition
and lighting are independent studies and merit just as much importance as
the camera being used. Processing a photo is very important too, but that
would be a separate subject.

If I understand correctly, the implication is:

Since it is no longer necessary to generate a "hard copy" (print or
transparency) of an exposure
Digital "mistakes" are essentially cost-free and are likely to have been
discarded if photographically virtue-less
One could expect never to see the rejects and
All pictures we *do* see are "not bad" in a strict sense.

OK.

That makes sense, for a given definition of Photographic Virtue;
however, it is not always Photographic Virtue that determines if an
image is discarded.

Artistic, Educational, and Personal/Sentimental Virtue must also be
considered in evaluating the continuing existence of a photograph.

So, my conclusion is:

Every picture we can see is not a bad picture, somehow, for someone.

Good thing is mistakes are free, shooting dupes (bracketing) is free and
it is easy to destroy the bad ones!
