Pentax *ist DS Lens and External Flash Compatibility
I have an old Sunpak 522 external handle-mount flash unit and a set of
photo-strobes that I used to use for portrait work back when I was shooting nothing but 35mm. I'm now thinking about getting a digital SLR that can use my stock of Pentax K-mount lenses and my flash units. First, does anyone know whether or not the Pentax *ist DS can accept the flash units that I used to plug into he "X" sync socket of my old 35mm SLRs? I know it has a hot shoe but I don't use hot-shoe flash units. Second, are Pentax digital SLRs the only ones which will accept my old Pentax K-mount lenses? Thanks for any info. you can provide and have a great day! |

I know it has a hot shoe but I don't use hot-shoe flash units. i have two 522s, and one has substantially higher trigger voltage than the other. i don't remember the exact voltages but it was something like 10v in one and 100v in the other. i was rather surprised at the difference. to be safe, get a wein safe-sync. it should work fine with x sync, and you'll just get the auto settings from the flash. the only custom 'module' i've seen for the 522 is the remote unit which is for olympus. Second, are Pentax digital SLRs the only ones which will accept my old Pentax K-mount lenses? they'll work but you'll need to stop down meter if there's no 'a' setting on the lens, and obviously, no autofocus either. |
