Default question for a change

why don't color management systems start out with LMS?
the long, medium, and short spectral sensitivities of the eye
as opposed to XYZ, tristimulus values

I notice CIECAM02 reccomends a 3x3?4 matrix to convert
between LMS and XYZ for appearance considerations to be
applied (I bought the CIECAM02 document)

I realize there is such a thing as "good enough color"
for many applications, but scientific and even the statistical
considerations of commercial systems might need rigor
