I know you can use older lenses with the *ist-D by doing custom
programs, but will the Pentax 6x7 to K adapter work with the *ist-D?

That depends on the lens. A-series and newer won't need any special
settings. K and M and earlier need a custom setting (which you set once
and never set again). Either way, the limitation is that you might not
be able to do mutli-metering.

but will the Pentax 6x7 to K adapter work with the *ist-D?

There's probably a limitation on metering, but really nothing else. I
don't know if the K-mount adaptor will let you set the aperture on A or
any of that. I'd be curious to find out for sure.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any such option. According to the manual
(downloaded from Pentax) it doesn't even automatically stop down to the
taking aperature. You have to focus with the lens wide open in "auto",
then switch to "manual" to stop down before tripping the shutter.

I was wondering because of something I ran across while looking for
something else, and was inspired by the "will it ever end" thread
regarding Canon's 1200mm f/5.6 lens ...

Pentax offered an 800mm f/4 lens for the Pentax 6x7 MF camera. It
appears that lens might in fact still be available by special order.

And Pentax DOES offer an adapter that will mount P67 lenses to a K mount
body.

It's a silly idea, but I was imagining that 800 f/4 mounted on an *ist-D
(or actually mounting an *ist-D on that lens).

Again looking at the adapter manual, that's what it's made for ...

"Among the lenses for the Pentax 6x7 camera, the 400mm, 600mm and 800mm
lenses are very useful for Pentax 35mm cameras because they have a fast
speed of f/4 - faster than any SMC Pentax ultra-telephoto lenses."

And based on the price I ran across where the lens was offered as a
special order, it would actually cost less than Canon's 1200 f/5.6

It's not that silly an idea at all, if you've got a couple extra people
along to lug the thing around for you. But if you can drop down the bux
for the lens, you might as well just get a 6x7, too.

Your post reminded me of something I read a while back:

Well, two things ...

Used with the Pentax 6x7 it would be the equivalent of a 400mm f/4 for a
35mm. On a 35mm Pentax body, it would BE an 800mm f/4. With the *ist-D,
it would be the equivalent of a 1100mm f/4 lens.

It doesn't weigh more than an M60 machine gun; or weigh as much as the
M240B. I've humped those a time or two.

Not that I've got $7+ grand to drop on this lens right now, but it's an
amusing daydream.

I think the manual for the adapter hasn't been re-written for a long time,
since Pentax has had 400mm f2.8 and 600mm f4 lenses for 35mm available for a
very long time now. Interesting idea, the 800mm, all the same.

Are the Pentax 400 f/2.8 & 600 f/4 KA lenses still available? I'm pretty
sure neither has made it into a KAF mount.

The 600mm f4 certainly made it into the AF mount: my 600mm f4 is the F*
version, but an FA* version was also made after that and should still be
available. The 400mm f2.8 is an A*, not sure why an AF one wasn't made -
the f5.6 is an FA*.

Apparently the 400mm f2.8 A* and 600mm f4 FA* both ceased _production_ in
2004, though that probably means some dealers or the factory may still have
stock.

Incidentally, Pentax also used to make a 1200mm f8 A*. Not something I
would want...
