Term 'raster' versus 'bitmap'
What is the opposite of "vector graphics" -- is it "bitmap graphics" or
"raster graphics"? By vector graphics I mean of course files of commands to plot points and lines, as in Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, or PostScript files. What I'm looking for is the preferred term to designate files that are arrays of pixels (i.e., the kinds of files we edit with Photoshop, comprising JPG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, and some others). In Photoshop, "bitmap" means an array of blacks and whites with no other shades or hues. But I can remember the term "bitmap graphics" being used more broadly. Has "raster graphics" replaced it? Or something else? Please just tell me which term you actually use, and hear people using; lengthy philosophical arguments are not needed, since I already know the origins and some of the history of both terms. Thanks! |

You are correct. I consider both the terms 'bitmapped' and 'raster' to be synonymous and opposite of vectored. |

... I've done a little work on image conversion drivers. I've never heard the term "bitmap graphics". I've always heard "raster graphics". Useful data point. Thanks! |
