The idea of flash diffusion is not patented, but the individual

it doesn't matter if it's a LightSphere, LightBottle, bounce card

or tracing paper....

I just invented my own diffuser with some experimenting. For the
built-in flash on my D200... I started with tracing paper... almost no
difference... then dug up an old pplastic garden path light diffuser:
plastic designed to diffuse with ridges & frosted surface... a little
better but not a big difference... still harsh flash shadows... then I
cut that in half & doubled it with about a 1-inch gap between the two...
big improvement. This is based on a pricipal I learned from interior
designers for diffusing light through a window you use two sheer white
curtains with some separation, one doesn't do much but two really gets
the job done.

I'm not showing pics of it cause it's butt-ugly but what I did was cut a
piece of plastic to slide into the hotshoe & taped that to the diffuser
which curves over the popped up flash & rests on the lens. Easy to
remove with the hot-shoe attachment.

Then I designed a bouce card. Crinkled foil does a much better job that
a white business card... attachment is with another piece of plastic
(plant label bent with 4 folds), which then slides thru a slot in the
business card after mounting on the hot shoe thru the hole in the pop-up.

BTW I suck at flash... I always avoided it. I don't even get the iTTL
deal: there is almost no change in shutter speed in aperture priority
mode, it just provides fill light, even in slow synch mode and results
in a brighter exposure when flash is a major part of the exposure.
Hmmmm. I figure if I'm going to play with these diffused versions, I'll
keep it cranked up to max output since it's just a wimpy on camera flash
diffused.

Now the Dems are just the party of the fringe special interest groups
and the socialists. The Republicans aren't perfect, but they are the
closest thing to reality that we've got.

Yes, and I worry about that. It was good when both parties had some
responsible people....Somehow, the American voters could pick good
presidents out of the crowd....But, today, I'm not so sure....I am afraid
that the two front running Democrats are going to be too weak to stand up to
a world full of totalitarian leaders like Kim Jung Ill and Ahmadinejad. Of
the two, I think that Hillary could do best, but she is still a Robin
Hooder, so I am afraid that when I die, she will take all my money away from
my kids and give it to the welfare puppies. I guess it would be a small
price to pay if she stood up to the maniacs of the world.....I just wish I
could figure out what goes through the minds of socialists.....I lie awake
at night trying to figure them out..........

Surely all this political debate must be Gary Fong's fault? lol ;-)

Yeah....That'll teach him to mess around with a perfectly good, conservative
flash unit.......

What he really needs to do is get a job working for NG, so he can

That would be nice! There really isn't anything stopping him from doing
so.
Doing so will quickly weed out the true photographers from the Photoshop
jockeys.

NG probably employs a dozen or so Photoshop wizards....They probably make
about as much money as the old keypunch operators......All their
photographers have to do is take the pictures......

Crap in equals crap out. And the dozen of Photoshop wizards aren't going
to
waste time straightening things out that should have been done properly
in-camera. Bret does a sweet job in Photoshop, but viewing his unaltered
RAW files will reveal volumes.

Yeah, but it all depends on what you are taking....Wildlife photographers
don't usually have a lot of time to set up and do it all
right......Sometimes half the work has to be done in Photoshop......

Elect Hillary or Obama or Edwards and you can guarantee your
disposable income will shrink, so buy those toys now while you can,
and thank Mr. Bush for making it possible while it lasts.

Yes, as an Australian I thank GBW for reducing the value of the US dollar to
almost nothing. During the Clinton Administration our dollar was worthless
against the US dollar. Since GBW, it's now worth twice as much :-)
(It's hardly changed against the Euro or NZ dollar, nearly all the increase
is due to the devaluation of the US dollar)
I'm not really sure why a US citizen would consider that a good thing
though?

How much did you pay when Bush took office?

Can you tell me with a straight face that you actually believe Bush or
any other president sets the price of gasoline at the pumps?

Of course, now that the Democrats have control of Congress, their

You have to admit that anything Bush touched in his life has turned to ****.
The Democrats are just being taken down by Bush's residual second hand ****.

Maybe things aren't to your liking as a liberal, but that doesn't mean
things have turned to sh*t. You can't blame the incompetency and
childish shenanegans of the congressional leadership on Bush.

You illustrate the hilarious thing about the Bush bashers. No matter
what Bush does, there's something wrong with it. No matter what goes
wrong with anything, it becomes Bush's fault. Even the stupidity of
the Democrats becomes Bush's fault in your mind.

With all the rabid criticism of Bush, I have yet to see any Democrat
offer an alternative solution to any of the issues that would actually
work.
