Default EXIF layered on to image?

A publisher that makes a trial version available with full functions, is
well aware of the potential for abuse. This is no more unethical than an
airline that overbooks.

those are two totally different things.

trial versions are to sample something before paying.

overbooking reduces prices for everyone by minimizing waste.

The publisher is gambling that even the person
who uses it "only for one job," may eventually purchase a full version.
Some trial versions have limited capability, some, such as DXO place a
watermarkin the trial version, after the expiration of the trial period.
My point is that a lot of publishers are willing to accept the risk.
I'm not so sure using a trial version in the manner intended by the
publisher is "underhanded." Don't forget, there is also a learning
curve. Once one has invested in the leaarning curve, I am not convinced
that if the produce satisfied a need, eventually users will purchase. If
the product satisfied a need, but the user cannot afford the product,
they were not going to purchase anyway.

yep.

I fully in favor of using a trial version to determine if the program
is right for the user.

What bothers me is the suggestion to use a trial version *only* to
perform a series of tasks on a single project.

The publisher is willing to take the risk, but the way this suggestion
was advanced is like suggesting that your wife or girlfriend should
buy a dress for a special function, wear it for the night, and return
it the next day.

that's not the same thing since stores are not offering clothing on a
trial basis.

the vendor knows quite well that there are those who might use a trial
version for a one-off and they also know that those very same people
may come back and buy their product versus a competitor's product
should they need it again.

the problem is if someone uses a trial version on a perpetual basis by
resetting the counter.

That is not an ethical question. It is outright stealing.
