Who on earth ever claimed that DSLRs owe their existence to
pro-video-shooters?

Is this you?

Indeed, I certainly never thought that DSLR's were going to replace
dedicated pro video cameras. Nonetheless, they're a handy way for the
advanced amateur and the pro to get high-quality footage at low cost.

"...feedback from broadcasters, particularly in the U.K., indicated
that the image from DSLRs was not up to broadcast standards..."

I'm not a broadcaster, thus I am unqualified to evaluate that claim. I
would note, however, that those scenes from the opening credits of SNL
that were shot with Canon 7D's and the episodes of "30 Rock" and
"House" that were made with Canon DSLR's looked to me like broadcast
quality.
