[OT] [GP] "3MP" Showdown

He will cite portions of reviews to ostensibly support his claims, and will repeat, ad naseum, complete lines of out-of-context material. His claims may well be ignored, or at the very least verified since most of them are extreme distortions and some are out and out fabrications." Moreover, "Mr." "Preddy" has claimed to be a photographer (pro!), but cannot bring himself to post a single picture with EXIF info that he shot himself, in spite of repeated requests and challenges to do so. Apparently he loathes anything related to Canon and loves everything about Sigma cameras and lenses. His "claims" may be ignored, and he is doing Sigma, and anyone related to the Foveon chip, no good at all by arousing ire, increasing the N/S ratio, and generally spamming this newsgroup. -- John McWilliams |

"George Preddy" wrote in message om... 3MP Bayer image (0.75 Foveon MPs) http://www.pbase.com/image/30338213/original 3MP Foveon image (13.72 Bayer MPs) http://www.pbase.com/image/23256593/original Yup, you proved that the Sigma takes a significantly better photo than a compact P&S that (in Australia at least) costs 1/6th the price of the Sigma. I notice that there is no exif info for the Sigma - what ISO? what exposure settings? The only way to make a proper comparison is if both cameras take a photo of the same subject in the same lighting. Considering I've seen much better quality photos than that out of 3MP P&S's I'm dubious about how accurate the ISO settings etc are with the Sony. Considering the Sigma has a larger sensor size and better lens than the DSCP72, and costs several times its price, it's to be expected that it will always take a better photo in the same conditions - irrespective of whether it is a Foveon or a Bayer sensor. This is just the same as how a cheap film SLR will usually take a better photo than a film P&S, even with the same film. |

Steve, you are wrong, again, as usual. Sigma does not dominate this market. Sandy, in terms of quality Sigma is dominant right now, no other pro DSLR is even close. Certainly not the ancient 1Ds, with its barebones electronic side, small sensor pitch, and blurry old 90's vintage 0.35 micron CMOS. Certainly not the moire-machine 14n. Not only is Sigma dominant, there's literally no competition in the pro class. Sigma is outclassing medium format film, no one else is halfway to 35mm in full color performance. and canon and nikon outsell sigma to the pros by 10,000 to 0. sigma could disappear tonight, and none of the pros would notice. |

What it shows is that a small-sensor digicam will produce results which are dominated by noise if you run it at high iso. The image at: http://www.pbase.com/image/30968764/original was taken with a similarly cheap compact P&S. It's by no means a technically flawless shot but it's in a different league to the Sony picture George referenced. The picture of the SD9 contains a useful illustration of why blur filters should be used even when sampling with full colour at each location. Simply view the picture at 50% with an application that does not do proper antialiasing for generating such a view (eg GIMP) - artifacts are very visible in the filter threads. Similarly my own picture shows a mess of artifacts at 25% - Len |
