For such you can be sure that, just like in Thailand or wherever, there is a Nikon optics engineer based at the plant. -- -- r.p.e.35mm user resource: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpe35mmur.htm -- r.p.d.slr-systems: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpdslrsysur.htm -- [SI] gallery & rulz: http://www.pbase.com/shootin -- e-meil: Remove FreeLunch. -- usenet posts from gmail.com and googlemail.com are filtered out. |

What's the big deal? Cameras and optics have been made in China for years.
Many of Nikons other lens are made in China. "Alan Browne" wrote in message ... RichA wrote: New 50mm f1.4 G is apparently made there. I guess Thailand wasn't cheap enough anymore? They're trying to convince everyone to make the West pay for their foray into C02 emission controls, because "the rich countries should have to pay." Regardless of what you think of the global warming fraud, the Chinese have enjoyed double-digit growth, courtesy of Western markets for the last 10 years while Western industry has transferred to them, and they want US to pay their way to Kyoto? |

Well the US is even worse for CO2. Regardless of what you think of the global warming fraud, It's real. Yep. It's real. But it's not man made. And do you know what? It stopped in 1998. But nobody much seems to know that. the Chinese have enjoyed double-digit growth, courtesy of Western markets for the last 10 years while Western industry has transferred to them, And? Here's the most recent data and in a format that let's you play around: http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/internati...ableh1cco2.xls You can do things like reverse sort on column AD and see the ranking of nations in per capita emissions. But the interesting thing is to do a trend analysis on the China line vs. the US line (just plot them on a bar graph for simplicity) and then realize how many more capita China has than the US and you can see the problem. New 50mm f1.4 G is apparently made there. I guess Thailand wasn't cheap enough anymore? Isn't globalization great?! First, the Japs take out the American camera industry and now you say that the Chinks are eating their lunch? I say, Great! "Laid off yet? jour ... HEMI-Powered wrote: [] "Laid off yet? Keep buying foreign and you will be!" So what American-made DSLR or add-on lenses would you recommend your fellow countrymen to purchase? I'm not, it's a joke, David. The OP was (apparently) whining about where Nikon is building a certain lens, and noted it was formerly in Thailand and now is in China. Gee, Nikon used to be Japanese, right? Which is what caught my eye and the "isn't globalization great?" comment. As to my countryman, that's the other part that is NOT a joke, I'm afraid. For most countries, certainly the US, domestic manufacturing of goods is thing of the past, long past. What there is is really owned by a foreign company. Examples abound but I'm sure you know what I mean. People have the right to get the lowest possible prices for what they buy so it is natural to go to Wal-Mart. However, people must also understand that when entire industries move off-shore, the jobs don't go with them, they are lost domestically forever. This can an inexorable domino effect but is often so slow as not to be noticed until one wakes up and sees unemployment figures like we have now. In 1980 while running for office, Ronald Reagan said "Recession is when your neighbor is laid off. Depression is when you are laid off. Revovery is when Jimmy Carter is laid off." The last sentence is usually left off to make it more of an economic comment rather than a campaign slogan but it is even more true now, nearly 30 years later. Cheers! -- HP, aka Jerry “How do you have patience for people who claim they love America, but clearly can't stand Americans?” – Sydney Ellen Wade to President Andrew Shepherd in the movie “The American President” |
