I'm looking to buy a real close-up macro lense for my Canon 300D. Can anyone
offer suggestions please.

Yes, use your existing lens and buy an extension tube.

well, there are few, there is that canon manual focus one, 65mm if you want
a real hard core (i think it does 1:5 magnification), this is the "full
frame grain of rice" lens...very postive reviews on fredmiranda

there is the ef 100mm macro, which is a little cheaper about $500, but it
auto focuses, and I belive it does 1:1 it also got postive reviews on
fredmiranda

there is a ef 50mm "macro" that does 2:1 and can use an adapter (almost $300
I think) to achieve 1:1, and it costs about $250...I personally think this
is not as good a value as the ef100mm macro, because to achieve 1:1
magnification, you spend more

there are also a bunch of sigma macro lenses that look pretty good going by
the reviews at fredmiranda...they quite a bit cheaper, and to some extent
you get what you pay for, but they are fine value I'm sure.

If you really don't want to spend a lot of money, you can try a close focus
lens. I am using a b+w +3 lens on a ef 70-200 lens, and it has shortened
the focal distance to about a foot...maybe a little less, which is actually
perfect for my applications...combined with the telephoto, it works ok for
the money... ($30). The one problem I have with it is autofocus works
poorly with it on, but you can help by getting it almost in focus...also I
notice that the depth of field is very shallow with it, but I think that is
just the way macro works especially combined with the telephoto of effective
280mm.

I have the 300D and purchased a Tamron 90mm Macro with it. I have used this
lens in different configurations for years. The current one is desgined for
the digital Canons and is autofocus. Tamron also makes a 28-300 zoom with
macro that will give a nice tight shot but from a more of a distance thus
getting some more light in. Both lenses hover around the $500 price range.

Tamron 90mm is nice. One of those lenses which obtains a cult following-
including, seemingly, it's designers; they haven't altered the design much
since the 1970s...

The best would be the EF 100mm 2.8/f an excellent macro lens that can be
also used for portraits.
