Rich, why don’t you post your Windows bitching, and stuff to a Windows
NG where it belongs, not to r.p.d. where it is off topic?

The last time you did this on October 8, the result was a major pollution
of 296 OT posts in r.p.d., and your only post in the thread was the first
one.

I agree in general, but DC/DVD drives are something photographers might
use, aren't they?

The last time I used a CD/DVD for any sort of image file
sharing/archiving was over 15 years ago. The last time I used a Windows
machine was at work in February 2009, and then I retired.

You people have a weird belief in the reliability of cloud or solid state
memory. You know what some of the most reliable storage has proven to be?
magnetic TAPE.

Where do you come up with your strange ideas regarding what you think *us
people* believe?

I have redundant HDD & SSD backups along with various cloud, and online
services such as Dropbox, iCloud, Adobe CC, and SmugMug none of which is a
solitary repository of any of my image files. cloud services provide one
means of back-up, and/or sharing, but they also provide additional capability
the least of which is the ability to seamlessly sync between computers and
mobile devices.

I suppose you have an antique tape backup system to support your failing
CD/DVD setup?

Now will you stop your OT Windows posts on r.p.d.?

either of those is *significantly* more reliable than a cd/dvd, which
are among the least reliable of any storage media.

You know what some of the most reliable storage has proven to be?
magnetic TAPE.

and also one of the most inconvenient.

The comments seem to be about archiving files, and that's not the only
purpose of using a CD or DVD.

that never was a purpose of cd/dvds and those who chose to use them for
that purpose are in for some very unpleasant surprises.

but you are correct, there are other purposes. they make for great
coasters. they also are fun to microwave, just do it in a microwave
intended to be replaced. or, get a bunch of them for an interesting
halloween costume or do something for the community and build a
homeless shelter with them.

They are quite useful for sharing files
where you want to either mail the files to the other party or give the
other party a batch of files for the other party to view but not to
download.

not anymore they aren't.

it's far more efficient and *much* faster to email or post online.

There are other ways to do this, but that doesn't mean that there
aren't times a CD or DVD is a convenient way to go.

that was true long ago. not anymore.

the vast majority of computers in use today do not have an optical
drive of any sort and are physically incapable of using one, making
using a cd/dvd very *inconvenient* to use.

even for legacy computers with an optical drive, it's not as convenient
as clicking on a link.

One grandson recently made a movie using my copy of Premier Elements
and burned six copies to discs for his friends and handed them out at
school. It was a very topical movie, so the friends will view and not
download and can share that disc with others.

what's with this aversion to downloading? the year is 2018 not 1998.

It's like many other things: what we do, or don't do, personally
doesn't mean it isn't useful for others.

odd definition of useful, but whatever floats your boat.

I sometimes wonder about you, Duck. You have a top-of-the-line Mac,
no appreciable chance of a virus, and sixty-two back-up systems.

Not quite top-of-the-line Mac, but close enough.

I am not at sixty-two back-up systems yet, but I appreciate the hyperbole.

Are you expecting an earthquake during a tsunami followed by a
meteorite shower?

You can’t be too prepared, but for me wildfire, and earthquake would be the
two most likely natural disaster threats.

For me, it's hurricanes, my house falling into a sinkhole, and
lightning strikes.

While I do back up my files, I'm not all that concerned about my
"hobby" photos. It's not what I've already done, but the photo I
might take next that's of interest. Once I'm gone, the hobby shots
will be of interest to no one.

The family photos, though, are different. Every January I pick the
best from the previous year, have prints made, and add them to the
albums that my son and daughter have.

Prints in albums are unappreciated by some people, but it's still nice
to leaf through the albums.

I have a 27” Retina 5K 27” iMac with a 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7, and 32 GB
of DDR4 RAM. If I was going to buy a top-of-the-line I would have spent about
$1500 more than I did to get an iMac Pro configured my way.

You have to watch for those sinkholes.

I have a few old family albums which prove that there was a time I was
adorable. Now not too many care. ;-)
