Example of Fast Normal Lens on a Lumix DMC-L1
I took this shot with a Sigma f1.4 30mm lens on my Lumix DMC-L1. The

With children I would go 1/100 - 1/125 at least in order to arrest any movement. But you probably know that already. DOF is fairly shallow at that exposure as you mentioned.
