Default What do you considering the upper limit for ISO?

Lets say you aren't pretending, like so many do that you can take
really good images at high ISO. Where do you draw the line? Canon
and Nikon are now boasting 100,000+ ISOs for their latest offerings,
the Canon isn't even FF! But lets say you shoot with a D700 and you
have the luxury of going with either 3200 or 6400 ISO. Can you
produce a shot worthy of keeping at 6400 ISO? Or are we just kidding
ourselves that the output at that ISO, or from any camera is
acceptable?
I shoot a D300. IMO, beyond 800 ISO I have trouble accepting the
images as really good. I'm talking about non-noise reduced raw
images. Sometimes, it's possible to use NR and not make the picture
look like crap, but the leeway is narrow.

I shoot my 5D II at ISO 6400 and I feel pretty good about the 11 x 14
prints. Just don't expect the same level of quality you get at ISO 100. I
gets lots of keepers at ISO 6400.

: High school football at night. The parents love those prints. Truth is, if
: you print big and view at a reasonable distance, I could do 20 x 30s at ISO
: 6400. Just don't get too close...

I was at a wedding last night and got into a conversation with the
photographer. (He spotted me because I had the only other serious camera in
the hall.) He lives a few towns up 495 from you; the wedding was in Tewksbury.
He mentioned that he'd like to branch into photographing high school sports,
and I told him that you've been doing that for a while with apparent success.
He'd love to hear any tips you could provide on how to get started. If you'd
be willing to do that, please send me your email address (mine above is
genuine), and I'll send you his name and email address. Or you can post here,
and I'll pass the info along to him. I didn't get to see any of this guy's
pix, but he's probably the hardest-working wedding photographer I ever
watched. He was everywhere in the room from beginning to end.

TIA for any advice you can provide.

Bob
