Olympus sticking with m4/3rds?

I'm glad, there is no reason to split the effort (and money) and produce a FF camera yet. Olympus has done a fairly good job with m4/3rds, I'm waiting for a E-M5III and I think the a smaller system (unless they go more into hulking bodies, like Panasonic has) still has a niche worth preserving. I think it's a mixed bag. For those entering photography this far into the digital age, there is little to no incentive to own a FF camera because the image quality of smaller format sensors continue to improve and already exceeds what most people do with those images. Those of us with an extensive collection of Olympus 35mm lenses are aging out of the market, so there's little incentive to cater to us. On the other hand, Panasonic has a significant investment in Leica products, and the owners and users of those products have some interest in owning a camera that takes full advantage of our R lenses. Even Leica has abandoned their 35mm SLR users, instead only offering MF and rangefinder (M) camera options, so Panasonic becomes the "gap filler" if they bring about a FF camera that natively accepts the R lens line. At present, Sony comes the closest to meeting the needs of that group, but it hasn't come close enough to warrant my spending the money on their bodies. So, we'll see. -- best regards, Neil |
