Default Best method for storing custom metadata

I have an application that processes images. I want to store
custom metadata with stored images and be able to read it back
later. AFAIK, there are two ways to go: (1) request a private
TIFF tag from Adobe, or (2) use my own XML schema as an
extension to XMP metadata.

I'd like to use the method that's least likely to be messed with
or discarded by other image applications.

Suggestions?

- Paul
