A few eagles have been around all winter, but their numbers have
recently increased.. http://edwardgruf.com/2014-02-13+_se...s/_DSC8341.jpg http://edwardgruf.com/2014-02-13+_se...s/_DSC8350.jpg |

Where were they taken? Chisman Creek Seaford, Va, ~10 miles south of Yorktown, at the end of the street I live on abutting the creek. |

We were talking abut spending a few days in VA Beach, which is not that far. I want to check out the swamps and old farms near Waverly. -- PeterN |

Just more common sightings in the past couple of weeks. There is a nest up in Yorktown near the site of the Moore House where the Articles of Surrender were signed. I drive by that on weekends after the morning dog gathering on the picnic grounds on the York River. Haven't spied any activity in this nest yet. |

North of there, to the east of Hopewell is the James River National Wildlife Refuge. I've not ventured over the west shore of the James River, but have done a lot of walking on the east side just past Kingsmill and before Jamestown. On this side there is a couple mile stretch you can walk on the shore for a few hours on either side of low tide. Spring and summer there is a lot of wildlife about early in the morning. Used to start just before sunrise with the dog. http://edwardgruf.com/Buddys_Boondoc...eek/index.html http://edwardgruf.com/2012-02-26_james_wormley/ All but the mute swans in the 2nd link are from a single morning's walk on that stretch. No matter what side of the James you're on a good resource for tidal info is at: http://www.sal****ertides.com/dynami...iniasites.html |

According to Google Maps, Waverly is about a little over an hour from you. Now if my daughter will lend me her dog, ...... https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/97242118/stormy%201.jpg Seriously, I think there is a lot of good material in the tidal area. The shooting in Waverly is totally different. Don't know if I can swing enough time for both. Depending on my wife's health, I can see a neat trip. You are lucky to live in that area. -- PeterN |

Yes, given the confluence of more than a few rivers with the bay there is one heck of a lot of tidal wetlands. On the bad side is that means it also creates lots of choke points during rush hours. I'm lucky and work 12 miles from the house and have quite flexible hours. But I grew up on the west side of Suffolk County, LI and worked in SoCal after graduate school, so I've seen traffic issues all my adult life. There are a lot of transient folks in the area given the huge military presence and it can be amazing to find folks that don't know what the area can offer many times right in their own back yard. If you can borrow the dog, weekend morning outings happen in/on the picnic beach area in Yorktown on the shore of the York River. http://edwardgruf.com/dogs_2014_1/index.html If the timing is right pre-sunrise color can be amazing. http://edwardgruf.com/2012-01-11_yorktown_am_color/ |

For all practical purposes that dog is my daughter's baby. We lived near each other. I live in Western Nassau County, and my office was in Hauppague. The main reason we live here is our lifestyle. We are about 20 minutes from the beaches, less than forty minutes from NYC, a day trip to Tanglewood, A long weekend trip to ME, close, but not too close to Atlantic City & the CT casinos, and about a six hour drive to various other places we like to visit for a few days. -- PeterN |
