Stolen from luggage at either Dulles or LAX airports in the U.S. - Geoff

Surely your travel insurance and/or the airline involved, would be
responsible for replacing/compensating for the stolen items??

It wouldn't be the airline, but more than likely the baggage handlers behind
the scenes at the Air Terminal who did the stealing.
This is not that uncommon, and placing equipment of that caliber in checked
bagage is just asking for it to be stolen.
And try and collect from them since he is not able to say which place did
the dastardly deed.

Airlines have baggage liability limits, generally $250/bag or less.

Airlines have baggage liability limits, generally $250/bag or less.

But you can declare a higher value and pay for the extra insurance.

Sorry, I was mistaken, the limit is $9.07/lb for interstate flights in
the US, subject to a maximum of $1250 per traveler for checked
baggage, and most carriers do NOT provide additional coverage, fee or
not. If in doubt, check with your airline. Here are the regs:

Notice of Baggage of Liability Limitations
Liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage is limited unless a
higher value is declared in advance and additional charges are paid.
For most international travel (including domestic portions of
international journey) the liability limit is approximately $9.07 per
pound for checked baggage and $400 per passenger for unchecked
baggage. For travel wholly between U.S. points federal rules require
any limit on an airline's baggage liability to be at least $1250 per
passenger. Excess valuation may be declared on certain types of
articles. Some carriers assume no liability for fragile, valuable or
perishable articles. Further information may be obtained from the
carrier.

You will also note that for years, "Electronics" are not covered by an of
the liability insurance plans offered by most airlines.

I believe that you can get riders added to your homeowners insurance policy
that will cover expensive items that you keep with you when you travel
outside your home. Things like cameras and musical instruments are items
that are frequently put on such policies. If you do a lot of traveling with
these kinds of instruments, you would be well advised to insure them for
damage and/or theft. After all, even if you don't take your camera with you,
someone could break into your home while you are gone and steal it, so it's
no less safe while you are traveling with it.........
