Canon viewfinder magnifier hunt
Hi,
I am looking for a viewfinder magnifier to aid manual focus on my Canon 300D. I measured the viewfinder on my 300D and its ~23mm wide. Then I measured a friend's Pentax MZ-50's viewfinder and its also ~23mm wide. So will the Pentax FB 2x magnifier fit the Canon 300D? Generally, will any magnifier that can fit a viewfinder that is 23mm wide work on the Canon 300D? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...u=41404&is=REG Thanks, Siddhartha |

Years ago I had a Pentax diopter correction eyepiece which fit my Canon (23mm) square (actually rectangular) viewfinders. Whether the one shown in your B&H link measures the same as the Pentax manual focus isn't indicated. Also note: the Canon Magnifiers don't have adjustable diopter focusing. Another consideration: Canon also had (still have?) the "Angle Finder B", which does allow diopter adjustment. See he http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=122655&is=REG he http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=183200&is=REG and he http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...7548 900&rd=1 This one shows the "Adapter S" attached Joe Arnold |

Another consideration: Canon also had (still have?) the "Angle Finder B", which does allow diopter adjustment. Ok, I made some errors in measurement. I erroneously measured the outer edges of the viewfinder. Now, I took off the plastic mount on which the rubber relief is mounted. I measured distance (horizontal) between the inner edges of the plastic mount. Its 18.5mm for the Canon 300D and 19mm for the Maxxum 5. I tried interchanging the plastic mounts to confirm for size but they don't slide in because the plastic mounts for each have slightly different design. Unfortunately, I don't have precision measurement tools like a vernier calliper to get the exact specs. Now, from an eBay posting I discovered that the magnifier for the Pentax K mount and screw mount series are also 18.5mm wide!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW Thats good because I almost bought a yashica magnifier thats 23mm wide off eBay. In the last 10 mins, my internet connection gave up and I couldn't bid for the auction As for the Canon Angle finder, thats expensive - both B & C. Besides, I don't want an angle finder. The Canon Magnifier S with adapter S turns on eBay every now and then and goes upto $60 easily. The Pentax and Yashicas sell for much less - typically under $20. An eBay seller posted the Yashica as having 23mm width. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW I also came across this reference that says Minolta Angle Finder VN fits where Canon Angle finder C does. http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-...?msg_id=00BaTr So the adapters have to be the same size and that means whatever fits Canon should fit Minolta and vice versa. I'll be glad if someone can confirm my measurement because I am in India and can only see the magnifiers on eBay or online stores. - Siddhartha |

What about the Canon Anglefinder C which has magnification and will
definately fit all EOS (plus some FD) Canon bodies, with one of the two adaptors. -- http://www.chapelhillnoir.com home of The Camera-ist's Manifesto The Improved Links Pages are at http://www.chapelhillnoir.com/links/mlinks00.html A sample chapter from "Haight-Ashbury" is at http://www.chapelhillnoir.com/writ/hait/hatitl.html "Siddhartha Jain" wrote in message ups.com... Hi, I am looking for a viewfinder magnifier to aid manual focus on my Canon 300D. The problem is more likely the "style" of focus screen used more than anything else. They choose to use a fine grained/brighter screen assuming most users rely on AF and would like the brighter screen. When I was camera shopping I saw why some of the competition's screens were reviewed as being "dimmer", they use a screen that allows easier manual focusing.. There is more to focus screens and finders than just being extra bright yet reviewers only seem to note the brightness, not how well you can see the focus point. -- Stacey |
