Olympus is very strong in the medical and scientific optical device
market. I doubt that will be going away any time soon.

Which is why they didn't sell that piece.

It seems like you're looking at Olympus' business decisions backwards.
There is no reason why Olympus needs to sell "...cheap plastic
knick-knacks..." like companies without a solid base. Camera
manufacturing was not needed for the company's survival. I suspect that
is why they never put sufficient resources into marketing those
products. Many photo enthusiasts think of the inexpensive entry-level
products rather than the unique and excellent cameras and lenses that
those in niche markets needed. For cameras like the OM-4 (film) and
TG-4/5 there were no equivalents.

because it was not profitable and they haven't a clue how to make it
profitable.

the om-4 was amazing in its day, but that was 35 years ago and not
relevant whatsoever.

olympus had their chance to make a digital om-4, but they blew it. they
also completely ****ed over their users who bought their film slrs.

smartphones have completely obliterated the traditional camera market
and the legacy camera makers have not adapted to the new reality.
