Tripods

Can anyone suggest a decent mini-tripod for a pro-sumer camera? I'll be using it
with a Fujifilm HS30EXR and while I want small, so I can put it in the case, I
want sturdy too. Thanks.

How mini? Table-top, or just compact?

There is a Gitzo Mountaineer I think is very compact (4 section legs) and
rigid for its size. Pricey though. Most of the lesser mini-tripods I've
seen are junk and so are cheap compact heads.

This one isn't too bad, not too expensive either.

Camera shops sell tripod components so you can put together exactly what
you want, or even buy parts for a few different uses. Generally,
spending more money gets you a tripod that has a better stability to
weight ratio. Try them out with your camera to see how long it takes
the tripod to settle after being poked.

Avoid tripods at electronics stores. They're so springy that they're
only good indoors with a wireless remote.

You might need to turn off the camera's stabilization for long exposures
on a tripod. I don't know about Fuji's sensor shift tech, but Canon's
lens stabilizers slowly wander by a small amount. It looks similar to
what happens if you stand too close to the tripod.

You need to clarify. When you say "mini-tripod" are you referring to a
"table-top" type tripod, or a compact tripod which can still be used
placed on the floor and raised to a reasonable working height?

....and I am assuming that you are not looking for a tripod which costs
more than your camera.

Last I looked, B&H had affordable tripods from two or three Chinese
manufacturers. I have two tripods (table-top and full size) of the "Benro"
brand that I bought there. Both are beefy and have decent ball heads. Both
tripods and heads come in various sizes, so that you can match the
load-bearing capacity of each to your requirements.

Tripod manufacturers, like camera manufacturers, seem to provide their wares
in several parallel lines that differ from one another in subtle ways (such as
whether you can use them as monopods, etc.). So read the descriptions
carefully, and make a choice based on your specific needs.

Their stuff is great, but quite expensive. I spent just under $900 the
other year upgrading my tripod head and mounting plates (on the same
legs I've used since 1982). They're one of the players in VERY serious
support gear.

B&H carries a line of Benro tripods in which one of the legs detaches to form
a monopod. My Benros don't have that feature, so I can't comment on how well
it works.
