Anybody have any real-world experience with the new Epson 4870 Scanner and either medium
format or large format negatives and/or transparencies?

Yes:

Really pleased with the results. Have scanned both B&W negatives and
transparencies from 6x6, 6x7, 6x7, 6x12, 4x5 using the standard
holders and 5x7 using a matt board.

Outut to Photo 2200 is excellent.

For a certain range of applications - scanning of 4x5inch and 120/220 films,
you can visit my homepage at http://www.gnyman.com and see the product
comparison, I made there between the 3200 and the 4870....
Greetings George

George, what software did you use in the scanner tests? Certainly I expect
to see differences between the 4870 and the older 3200. However, your 3200
scans are not at all representative of what I've seen with the 3200 and
Silverfast. In fact, they can be quite artifact free depending on your
settings. I will hasten to add that the detail crops on the 4870 scans are
most impressive.

I looked at these results and I am quite disappointed....in that I own
a 2450. I too am surprised by such a large difference between the two
scanners. I certaily hope _my_ 2450 does better than your 3200 (in
other words, I hope there's some problem with your 3200).

-Does anyone have any thoughts about fluid mounts and flatbed
scanners? Is it worth it? I'm interested in any web based info. A
while back I stumbled on a DYI site for making a film holder, but I've
lost the site.

I notice that Epson makes two versions of this scanner -- a "consumer"
version, and a "pro" version. Anyone know the differences -- and is
the pro worth the extra money?

TIA,
Marco

In the past, the 3200 Pro came with more and better software than the other
3200. Check the items that are included in the package. In particular,
Monaco EZColor profiles the scanner and printer. Very little will change
your workflow so dramatically as having scans that match the original
transparency, and softproofs that look like what comes out the printer. It's
well worth the price difference alone. That's a good thing, because I hear
VueScan is much better and faster with dICE than everything else. I use
Silverfast Ai on the 3200, so can't do any more than hearsay about VueScan.
