It went something like this: There were four guys who liked to get together at a local poker club for a game once or twice a week. There was a fifth guy who didn't play but would hang around the table and kibitz, making a pain in the ass of himself by second-guessing everything the players did. So one evening the four got together before their game and formulated a plan to thwart the kibitzer. As usual, the game began with each of the four players drawing a card to choose a dealer. But on the first hand the dealer dealt four cards to the first player, five to the second, and four to the third. Then he tore the next four cards into quarters and dealt the pieces to the other three before taking six cards for himself and turning up two on the board. The players stared at their hands for a while; then the player to the dealer's left opened the bidding: "I have a mingle, so I'll bet $100." "Well, I have a snazzle," said the second player, "So I'll call and raise you $200." The third player folded without betting, and the dealer studied his cards at length. Throughout these proceedings, the kibitzer was becoming visibly agitated, rolling his eyes and shaking his head. Finally the dealer said, "I have a farfle, so I'll raise to $500." The kibitzer could no longer contain himself. "Are you out of your mind?" he bellowed. "Trying to beat a mingle and a snazzle with a lousy farfle?!!" Bob |
