why do you want to rename the files?

that information is already in the exif data in the file which an asset
manager can see and display as well as sort and do queries on. it's a
*lot* more powerful than trying to look at a list file names.

Using a Sony digicam with a number of different memory sticks, which
assign the same file names occasionally that I want to have in the
same folder, etc. ...

an asset manager handles that for you, without you having to do
*anything*.
