If "online" means connected to a computer, yes, magnetic hard disks have
little use unless connected to a computer. But if "online" means connected
to a network of other computers, no, mag disks have not always been online.
Computers with mag disks were available without any means of connecting to
the outside world (modem or network interface). Over the years, I've added
modem or network cards to computers that came with a mag disk.
