As soon as you start doing any filtering operations you will can
overshoot - ie. you need a range -32768..0..32767, what I would call
signed 16-bit. Of course, no physical medium can depict the negative
brightness levels the negative values imply.
Anf what are they, anyway? Thirsty light sponges?
