Its called pellicle.
Canon had it in the Pellix line of cameras in the 70's and up until a
couple years ago in the 1nRS.
But granted, it does loose a bit of light to the film.

Which is, I assume, the reason for its demise. Basic conceptual flaw, IMHO.
