You really didn't appreciate the lack of shadow detail in the images
you posted, did you? Just look how "muddy" the shadows seem.

I appreciate the amount of detail given the shallow depth of field and
very wide luminance range. How much difference would a larger sensor
have made? Hard to say because no comparable image is available.

It's not pure speculation, John, it comes from examining a number of
images made under comparable conditions by the different sensor sized
cameras. Murky shadows, lacking in detail, can be typical of small-sensor
cameras, particularly where some noise reduction has been applied (even
with that turned down to the minimum). It's the manifestation of the
reduced dynamic range caused by the smaller well capacity, so it has a
well-understood physical explanation.

Yes, a direct comparison on a particular scene would be preferable.
