Default Metz 402 - great for 1st shot but will not recycle for 2nd shot

After several years of non-use my 402 will "crank up and fire" only
one time on the manual setting. Whining starts immediately and the
ready light comes on within 10-15 seconds and the whining stops.

It will not recycle after the 1st discharge on the manual setting.

When using any of the 5 automatic settings (and aimed at a suitably
close target) I am able to discharge numerous times until the
capacitor has finally discharged but there is no sound indicating the
recharging or no ready light illumination.

A new and fully charged NiCd battery pack is being used.

If the unit is left switched on for hours it still does not give me
the 2nd recharge of the capacitor.

In order to have the capacitor recharge it is necessary to leave the
unit switched off for many minutes, perhaps an hour, before switching
it on again. It will immediately start to whine when turned on and in
a about 10 -15 seconds the ready light comes on and the whining stops.
But, I still have the problem as stated originally.

I've checked the Sam's, and some other, materials but cannot identify
the component which would probably be causing the problem. I'd like
to start using this flash again but it's not cost effective to pay for
the repair. It seems as if this may be something which could be
quickly corrected if a faulty part could be replaced.

What is the component which switches on/off the recharging of the
capacitor?

I've repaired several smaller flashes but those usually were bad
connections or a capacitor which just was "dead". Determining what
to do with this one requires more "smarts" than I have. Anybody out
there to help???

Any help in identifying the possible cause/solution of the problem
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Pat

It is the capacitor... Lots of luck finding one.
It might be cheaper just to get a new flash.
