Never worked out how posting to another group would prove you could post to
the group you really wanted to post to in the first place. ;-)

Exactly.
It is not uncommon for a particular group to go on the blink, while another
(such as a test group) works OK.

One way around the whole question is to simply post a REPLY to an old
thread--which accomplishes the test.
-But either way, it's easily ignored.

Thankfully, usenet is reiable enough that the occasional test posts remain
insignificant in number...since most folks have no problem and don't need a
test.

You don't understand how NNTP software works.. It's essentially
a big database.. All the groups are stored in the same place and
managed by the same computer. You can't have some groups not
working while the others do work. It's not possible.

That isn't actually true - moderated groups quite frequently give
problems. Additionally most/all news servers allow retention times to be
specified per group. If an administrator screws up and gives a group a
very small retention time it may render that group unusable on that
server.

Having said that, it is uncommon for one non-moderated group to work
correctly and another not to. (IME - there may be some servers [1] where
the admin is pretty chaotic.)

But of course there is no reason why a test message has to be headed
"test: please ignore" - you could always post something about
photography.

[1] Thinking about it further, make that: "there are some servers ..."

It most certainly is possible.
Not all news servers even carry all news groups.
A perfect example was the flurry of additional photo NGs a year or so ago.
Many could see them while others reported that their servers didn't carry
them.

So if I'm _seeing_ the group, what's the point of a test post to see if
it's carried? I'm just confused? ?

Thankfully most people know HOW to use test groups.

There are THOUSANDS of test posts sent to test groups every day. alt.test
is a very busy group and that's only ONE of the many test groups.

The fact these test groups are well used is WHY you don't see large
amounts
of test posts showing up in working newsgroups.

Many noobs are enlightened by fellow users who point out that it's a
courtesy to use test groups for test posts. If nobody mentions it,
how would would a noob ever know ?

Ya, that wasn't a good example.
:)
There are often glitches that happen though.
When you see multiple identical posts from someone, it is often because
something strange happened on the server end...where posts didn't show up
when they should have. This has happened to me numerous times.
