I'd go with a flattish camera (maybe Sony A7 size or slightly larger) with a molded grip, a 6x7cm 100mp sensor. To go with it, a 3x zoom, made as small as is practical to properly support the sensor with a 35mm equivalent range of 22-66mm. Also, the EVF would have 4mp and the LCD would be a 4" diagonal with HD resolution. And I'd like it with the lens for under $5k. Also, instead a small, blocky battery, it would have a large, flat battery with 1000 shot life. In-camera I.S. five-axis. Also the ability to manually select, from the LCD, exposure points that would be averaged.

SLR with mechanical shutter speed and aperature controls, along with
ASA setting (ISO I believe is a newer term.) Match needle metering
with option to switch from full screen or spot.

Something my way-more-than-50-year-old brain can handle. I don't use
my newer cameras often enough to remember all the new bells and
whistles.

so turn them off.

you do realize that modern cameras can be used in manual mode, but with
the advances of the past 50 years, right?

or put it in full auto and give your brain a rest. let the camera do
the grunt work like metering and focusing so you can concentrate on the
actual photo.

Here is a little something which would give you a taste of retro
nostalgia, and leave you with a fair amount of contemporary tech.

Battery doors break too much on them.

I have taken thousands of shots on both those cameras and never had
any problems with battery doors.
