Olympus GOES CHEAP. E-3, the flagship, MADE IN CHINA, CHINA!!!!

NO other camera company makes their higher end product there, they are
all still made in Japan. Olympus is really treading a thin line with
this.

The idea of "made in China" isn't what it used to be.

Can they make CRAP? Sure they can, But they will make anything
people want and TO THE SPECIFICATIONS they are asked to make it.

If you want a lens made, and hand-ground to some infinitesimal
fraction of perfection, that's what they'll do for you... if you want
a shoddy toy that falls apart before the next holiday season, they can
do that too.

Implying "communist china" is equal to "low quality" is a non sequitur
at best.

Oh sure. Was the last (for e.g.) socket set you bought at Walmart for

I GUARANTEE that the specifications for the size, and for the quality
of metal in both sockets was spelled out EXACTLY to the manufacturer
of each.

You're suggesting that it's the FACTORY that decides the quality of
what they make, but that's backwards... the company contracting with
the factory decides.

IF you think the products churned out are absolutely to spec, with no
variance, you don't know very much about Chinese production.
I wonder if the new Zeiss lenses will be fabricated in the toilet that
is Communist China? I doubt it.

In many cases, the factories churning out cameras etc are
owned by the parent company, and produce the stuff to
exactly the same specifications as if it was made in a
Japanese / Euro / US factory. The difference is the cheaper
operating environment - ie lower labour costs, lower energy
costs, lower governmental compliance costs etc.
There are cases where chinese factories are used to churn
out cheap crap but as a previous poster said, the quality is
set by the customer, not by the factory.

Yeah, right. It's much more likely for a company to allow a factory in
China (or anywhere else, for that matter) to produce items without any
regard to specifications. Contracts be damned. Reputation be damned.
Quality control, customer confidenc, standards certifications ... all
be damned.

I wonder if the new Zeiss lenses will be fabricated in the toilet that
is Communist China? I doubt it.

I don't know about this lens, but Motic manufactures the Primo Star
line of microscopes for Zeiss. Excellent microscopes for the
clinical/laboratory and advanced education markets.

Motic located in China. And since both Motic and Carl Zeiss are ISO
9001 certified, you can be damnsure the Primo Star microscopes are
manufactured to specification.

TR

Part of the manufacturing game is to get around ISO certifications,
which is often needed when parts become scarce, etc.
ISO violations were rampant in the 1990s during the electronic
component shortages caused by the Sumitomo foundry fire.

I spend 1/2 the year in PRC. It is as capitalist as any country you wish to
name, or more so. The government is another thing, but Deng Xiaoping made
sure it would not interfere with wealth aquisition. You simply would not
believe cities like Shanghai. The growth and industry are amazing. Whether
they can keep it up is another matter of course, but the change in the last
20 years strains the imagination, and it is not over yet.

It is a smart move on Olympus' part. You might notice that there is now
extremely good high tech stuff coming out of PRC, especially in the field of
electronics. Hard drives, graphics cards, memory, chips...We just bought a
$20,000 professional Fujinon video lens. Made in China. Works great. You
only have to look at traditional Chinese arts and crafts to see that these
people are prodigiously talented and able when the circumstances are
favorable.

If Olympus can stay on top of the QC issue they will kill the competition.
Stay tuned for more and more high end photo equipment coming out of PRC...

Oh dear, your bigotry is showing.

For toilet I was referring to what they've done over there with their
air, water, etc. 1 million a year dying of air pollution, 2/3 of the
water undrinkable, etc. I know life is cheap there (remember when
those 6 miners died in the U.S. and it was all over the news for
weeks? 2000 died in China this year similarly) but for anyone who has
never gone to a (technically) Third World city of any size, they have
no idea what filth is. The Soviets and Eastern Europeans treated
their countries similarly during their communist period.
