"Confirm folder replace"
"This destination already contains a folder named DCIM"
[x]Do this for all current items [[Yes]][Skip][Cancel]

In Windows, with Android over USB in MTP mode, copying the DCIM folder from
the phone to Windows, is easily enough done.
a. Select the DCIM folder on the phone
b. Copy it to a DCIM folder on the desktop

But when doing that with large DCIM folders, it takes a while...
"Calculating the time required to copy files"
so you go off and do other things....

Invariably, when the form finally comes up to the foreground asking:
"Confirm folder replace"
"This destination already contains a folder named DCIM"
"[x]Do this for all current items [[Yes]][Skip][Cancel]"
you're in the middle of something else.

Hence, when that form pops up to the foreground, you're invariably already
typing something at the keyboard, which the form interprets as a response!

You normally simply click the checkbox and press "Skip" (to skip
duplicates), but since you're already typing something in another
application, the damn Windows DEFAULTS to "Yes" instead.

Is there any way to either get that damn form to stay in the background
until I manually revive it, or, at least to get it to "Skip" all current
items by default (instead of to copy all by default)?

I get the impression there is more than one way to do it, so
why not select another method entirely ?

Why copy the whole DCIM folder? Why not just copy *.jpg into the DCIM
folder on your computer?

it's much easier to copy the whole folder.

even easier is to automate it.

Will iDevices not copy individual files?

of course they will.
