35mm slide and negative scanning - UK?
 

Any recommendations please for bulk scanning services in the UK?

These are family snaps - not high quality but worth a lot in sentimental
value and it's time to move them to digital for long term preservation
and accessibility.

So I'm looking for a good price/quality balance as these are not pro
quality films. But I would like dust/dirt issues to be minimised as far
as possible.

Home scanning might be an option if more cost effective - but I don't
know of what is currently a decent scanner.

I'd like the IR channel feature that I had in an old Nikon ICE Coolscan
I used a long time ago as it was pretty good at removing dirt/dust visually.

buy a used scanner, ideally a nikon coolscan, scan your stuff, then
resell it to the next person who has some film to scan for roughly what
your paid. the net cost will be negligible, maybe even a small profit.

on the other hand, scanning takes a lot of time. what's *that* worth to
you?

Good question...

If the scanner is decent and maybe takes a magazine bar that holds a few
and batch scans them (or a strip of 5-6 negs) *and* if it can get a
decent RAW scan on consistent settings so I can whack them through and
polish the files at leisure *then* self scan's a pretty good option.

If I literally have to fiddle with every file there and then scanning a
preview then a final, it will take forever :)


Good idea about buying a 2nd hand unit...

Looking like a 2nd hand:

Nikon CoolScan IV ED

is the only one in my price bracket. Anyone had any experience of that
particular model?

I have had one for a long time, ever since they came out. It's
excellent for this purpose.

Comes with a semi-automated holder that feeds in a strip of 5
negatives. You need to scan each manually, but it speeds up the
loading and pre-scan (to see what it is).

Also has another manual holder that will hold negatives or slides.
Either a strip or individual negs.

In both cases, the scanning of negatives WILL take a lot of time.
However, the results will be the best you can get out of such sources.

To have a service do it would be expensive.


I highly recommend an Epson scanner.


It will do a professional job at low cost

printed photos rather than negatives.

the quality desired/possible) to scan from the positives rather than
the negatives.

and generally not that good, otherwise it's *really* expensive.

I highly recommend an Epson scanner.

no it won't.

a dedicated negative/slide scanner such as a nikon coolscan is much
better, and with a used one, the cost is effectively zero.

slides.

definitely not.

*always* scan the negative or slide when possible.

scanning a print is *only* a last resort when there's no other option.

This will be faster at least, and the Epson can also do negavtives
pretty well.

it's nowhere near as good as a dedicated negative/slide scanner.
