I don't remember seeing similar restrictions earlier this year for the
air show at Langley AFB, sorry just can't get myself to call it by its
new name, JBL-E.

While explosives would be a threat, a more serious one would be a
biological weapon. And that could be fairly small- possibly the size of
a medium telephoto lens.

While explosives would be a threat, a more serious one would be a
biological weapon. And that could be fairly small- possibly the size of
a medium telephoto lens.

a lens isn't a compartment that someone would be required to open. only
the mirror box is a concern.

but now that you've publicized your plans, out of abundance of caution,
all lenses will now require full disassembly at the checkpoints. think
of the children. oh, and the pizza boxes.

Last USAF one I went to was at a British USAF base (RAF Mildenhall) in
Britain in the 90s. It was awesome. Everyone was there. Even the
Russians IIRC - one of the advantages of Britain, it's near lots of
other countries so those sorts of events can get a lot of participation
which makes for a very interesting day out.

Sadly, for obviously reasons that show doesn't happen any more.

So because they don't have a mirror, rangefinder cameras can't be
weaponized?

I didn't say the bio-weapon would be inside the lens; I said it could be
the _size_ of a medium telephoto lens. But since you want to go that
route...

example 1) Several years ago, my sister gave me a novelty Canon EF lens:
remove the lens cap to drink your hot coffee inside. At first glance, a
casual observer might mistake it for an actual lens, instead of a
compartment for a bio-weapon.

example 2) Lenses can be unscrewed (by means of the focusing helical),
allowing access to the space inside, or "compartment".

example 3) Many of my more valuable lenses live in their original lens
tube cases. One of these lens cases could be used as a "compartment",
with a shorter lens in a longer tube case with a false bottom.

Or a security guard could just look through the lens, either on or off
the camera.

Actually, it's not _my_ plan; it came from a Tom Clancy "Jack Ryan"
novel, where the bad guys used shaving cream dispensers to distribute
their bio-weapon at several indoor public events.

But I do agree: children and pizza boxes need to be banned from public
events. Perhaps the children could be put in the pizza boxes; it doesn't
have to be a one-to-one correlation.
