Arizona/Utah for any time period between July 14th.05 to Aug 8th.05? I need four but will settle for two. A little known insider secret ... show up at the Ranger Station (I think it's near mile marker 22 or so) before 9 AM and they have 10 walk-up permits for that day available, in addition to the 10 available 7 months earlier (which are always sold out in minutes). If more than 10 people are there they have a drawing to see who gets in. Since this three week period is likely to have very high temperatures (possibly life-threateningly high) I'd guess demand will be weak. Also note that in summer when you're there there's a decent chance of monsoon rains and this will likely close the access road where the Buckskin Gulch crosses the road for a day or so, so I would prefer waiting until the last minute to get a permit anyway. Disclaimer ... this has been the policy the past 4-5 years (even though it was not widely known or mentioned on their web site ... I found out quite by accident) but it could change at any time, given the fickleness of the BLM managers. Give them a call in advance to double-check that they are still doing this. Have a nice hike and take plenty of water. Bill |
Slight correction:
You show up in the morning and draw for 10 permits which are for the Following Day. Reason: people often start off on this hike well before the 9:00 am drawing.
